The Writers� World � official publication of The Writers' Resource Centre | Issue #19

The last week was an amazing one. We made contact with more writers than ever before, we�ve received more mail than ever before and we have more new ezine subscribers than ever before.

In purely commercial terms this translates to business expansion. To us, however, it�s more important than that � particularly when you scan the spectrum of our readership. Among our subscribers and members are doctors, engineers, financers as well as those that call themselves purely �authors�.

You see, the creative field is far larger than we could imagine. Everyone has a creative fibre...just not everyone has found it. But those that do express it in different ways than what would purely be called �art�. They express it in their work, in their engineering, in their doctoring, in their day-to-day lives.

Art, then, is everywhere. But, I�ll stop here before I digress into a mushy monologue and tell you a little about this week�s issue.

IN THIS ISSUE
The humble story competition presents a far greater opportunity to the writer than many may first think. For some, it will be the first time their work sees the light of day. Livia Chang from Express Media (John Marsden Prize � www.expressmedia.org.au) explains the importance writing competitions have for the aspiring author in her article �The Real Gains of Literary Competition�.

Disgrace uses the story of one man's downfall to reflect wider issues within a particular society, exploring the connections between the personal and the political in a country under transition. John Malkovich gives a believable performance as David Laurie, a womanising fiftysomthing Cape Town Professor. A reckless affair with a student leads to his dismissal. He subsequently decides to visit his daughter Lucy (Jessica Haines) at a remote farm in the eastern Cape that she shares with trusted black worker Petrus.

Father and daughter are a study in contrasts, Lucy is forward-looking and pragmatic, responding to the world by seeking reconciliation and offering atonement. David is old-fashioned and pig-headed, adopting positions of righteous anger and taking the moral high ground. When they are savagely attached by three black youths, David is finally forced to confront the realities of living in a South Africa where the old rules no longer apply and the balance of power has shifted forever.

Winter is upon us and what better pastime to take up in the colder months ahead than writing?

With the Sydney Writers' Festival and the Emerging Writers' Festival in May, the Melbourne Writers� Festival in August and Brisbane soon after in September, 2009 is shaping up as a busy one for Writers. And these are but a few of the important writers events that will take us through to the close of 2009.

May also marks the end of the Writers' Resource Centre�s short story competition. So, if you want to enter, you have until the end of May to get in your submissions. Best of luck to all of you who have entered, and there are quite a few, too! Click here for more details.

The Australian Poetry Centre is seeking poets interested in being a ‘poet-in-residence’ in a café in their capital city for six months. The 2009 WILDCARE Tasmania International Nature Writing Prize aims to encourage writers to explore the genre of Nature Writing in short story format of 2000 - 5000 words. Nature Writing is defined as literary prose whose major inspiration and subject matter is the natural world, including its significance for humans and/or their interactions with it. Winning submissions are printed in WILDTIMES and ISLAND Magazine. Submissions must be sent by mail to WILDCARE Inc c/- GPO Box 1751 Hobart, Tasmania Australia 7001, along with an entry form available from the website. Deadline 20 Feb, 2009.

Alan Marshall Short Story Award. Nillumbik Shire Council invites writers from across Australia to enter this annual short story competition. Prizes: $2000 Open Section First Prize; $1000 Open Section Second Prize; for stories up to 2,500 words long. $400 Young Writers' Section Prize for stories up to 1,000 words for writers aged between 15 and 19 years. Welcome to this special edition of The Writers' Resource Centre's
e-zine, Writers' World. It's special because we are announcing the winners of the Writers' Resource Centre's inaugural short story contest. We apologise for our tardiness, but it was truly difficult to choose.

There is some incredible writing talent in Australia. The truth is the best wordsmiths who sent stories did not necessarily gain a place on the list. Plenty of pieces exhibited excellent writing talent but lacked originality or an actual story - a story that pulled you in won every time over a beautifully rendered description. Some had wonderful titles with lots of promise. Some hooked you in at the outset but had endings that failed to deliver.

Here is the list. Sadly, many more narrowly missed out. We encourage you all to keep writing, honing your skills and entering our future competitions. So much of what is chosen also depends on subjective personal taste of the judge, and we plan to enlist different judges for every competition.
